Why toughen them up?

WHILE some sort of initiation is usual, outright physical assault is barbaric. This continues later at university, where this year some students have been so traumatised, they cannot even speak of what they went through to their friends.

And so the complicity of silence goes on. Victims are scared of being victimised further if they speak out. Pene Kimber shows great courage in bringing this brutality to light.

"Toughening" people can be done in other ways than inflicting physical and emotional damage.
