Teacher suspended after star expose

The Star, February 20, 2009 Edition 4, Angelique Serrao

A teacher at Parktown Boys' High School has been suspended after The Star's expose on corporal punishment and initiation at the school.

This is the second time the teacher has been in trouble - he was disciplined in an internal inquiry two years ago after hitting a learner with a hockey stick.

At the time the school suggested that he go though an anger management course.

Now he has been suspended following reports in The Star about group of Grade 11 boarders at the school were dragged out of bed at midnight by matrics, stripped naked and beaten with cricket bats, hockey sticks and golf clubs until some of them bled.

The Star was also given video footage of a Parktown Boys' teacher holding a stick while a teenager stands at a blackboard, waiting to be hit.

It is unclear whether the teacher in the video, which was taken in 2006, is the one suspended.

The GDE said the teacher had a disciplinary hearing yesterday and had been suspended from dealing with hostel activities with immediate effect.

The Star has been given the teacher's surname but is withholding it until we can get his comment.
