This picture, taken as a "frame grab" from a cellphone video, shows a teacher at Parktown Boys' High School about to hit a pupil with a piece of wood.
Elsewhere in the cellphone video there are scenes of pupils beating other pupils, apparently being encouraging by an adult man, whose voice is heard on the clip.
The incident took place a few years ago and involved pupils who are now in matric.
Some matric pupils at the school were accused this week of beating and abusing Grade 11 learners in a brutal "initiation ceremony" which took place at the school hostel.
Since The Star exposed the latest initiation brutality earlier this week, many parents, pupils and former pupils have come forward to claim that this sort of violence is part of the culture at Parktown Boys.
The school's headmaster, Tom Clark, has said the culture of violence is endemic to the country and the pupils, and not to the school.
