A school is a place of safety

June 11, 2009 Edition 1

As a caring mother and grandmother, I would like to address a letter to Pene Kimber and her son, not to admonish them but to say I admire you enormously for standing up against the bullies, past and present, of Parktown Boys' High.

If parents chastised a child to the degree alleged, they would be guilty of child abuse or assault

When we send our children to school, we give them into the care of the teachers, staff and ultimately the headmaster, in the belief that they will have our child's welfare at heart. Why are these people not being brought to account?

I have always been in favour of upholding school traditions, but remember them as being associated with and promoting honesty, leadership, dignity and compassion for fellow men, not lying and bullying.

Don't back down Pene; remember the power of one.
