Ritchie hits nail on the head

June 13, 2009 Edition 1

The article penned by Kevin Ritchie about the Parktown Boys High School debacle is spot on, especially in pointing out that real men protect the weak and lead by example. I was an officer in the military and any leadership training I ever did was evaluated not on how well we did in a given task, but on how we managed the weaker team members in order to achieve the objective.

Had this whole mess at Parktown been handled correctly at the outset by the headmaster, Tom Clarke, there would have been no need for Pene Kimber to have gone to the extremes she has.

How he has not been fired is unfathomable … not to mention the teacher with a previous disciplinary record.

Judging by the reported attitudes and behaviour of some of the parents involved, it is hardly surprising that their sons acted as they did in the first instance.

Clarke was possibly correct to say that the malaise is a product of society, but he is wrong in assuming the school doesn't play a role in it. "Quit ye like men" might have a different meaning for him.
